Welcome Back, Eagles!

Greetings El Segundo High School Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We hope that everyone had a fabulous summer.  We are looking forward to an exciting school year, and continued partnerships with our families and community members.

Please see below for a few quick reminders and updates.

New Staff Members

Please help us welcome the following new staff members to the ESHS family:

  • Gerardo Barajas - Math Teacher
  • Allison Davis - Band Director
  • John Eastman - Business and Social Studies
  • Yvette Habrun - Academic Counselor
  • Kyle Tacsik - ELA teacher
  • Lauren Webb - Speech Pathologist
  • Andrea Yob - Attendance Clerk
  • Darwin Zwissler - Engineering Teacher

Changes to Academic Counselor Assignments

We are very excited to add a fourth academic counselor to our school; however, this means that  assignments will be changing.  Dr. Habrun comes to us with over 10 years of high school counseling experience and has already proven herself to be a perfect addition to our mighty team.  For those students assigned to Dr. Habrun, you are in great hands.

The new assignments (based on last name) are:

  • Stephanie Burns        A-D
  • Yvette Habrun         E-K
  • Brandy Woods        L-Q
  • Tiffani Pinier         R-Z

*For Seniors requesting college recommendations, your former counselor will still be assisting you with those requests.

RULER - Social Emotional Learning Approach

This school year, El Segundo High School will continue to focus on both the academic and personal/social development of every student.   We are pleased to share that we will begin implementation of the evidence-based RULER (Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion) Approach out of Yale University's Center for Emotional Intelligence. This is a district wide initiative that was rolled out at our elementary schools last school  year.  The first semester will consist of staff training with full implementation beginning in January, 2020.  If you would like to learn more, please visit: https://www.rulerapproach.org/

The Class of 2020 CAASPP Challenge

In March, the Class of 2020 participated in the CAASPP Smarter Balanced Assessment.  This is the state assessment that is used to monitor a school’s overall progress.  When the Class of 2020 took the assessment, Administration challenged students to exceed the overall score achieved by the Class of 2019. If so, they would be treated to an off campus celebration.  We are very pleased to share that our Class of 2020 exceeded the Class of 2019, and all seniors are invited to participate in our off campus celebration that will take place on Friday, September 6, 2019 from 10:00am - 1:00pm.  Details will be announced and permission slips will be distributed on the first day of school.  Congratulations to our Class of 2020.  We are very proud of your academic success!!

One Final Note

The 2018-2019 school year brought much recognition to our school, most notably being named a California Distinguished School.  We were also named a California Democracy School and awarded the Golden Bell Award in recognition of our Biomedical Pathway, the California Exemplary Program Award for our Visual and Performing Arts Pathway, and the California Civic Award of Merit. While we are proud of our accomplishments, we  will continue to grow and transform to provide the best possible educational outcomes for our students and community.

We wish you much success in the 2019-2020 school year.  Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Our doors are always open!

Sincerely,
